Should I Be on A Renal Diet if I Have Stage 3 FSGS

Should I Be on A Renal Diet if I Have Stage 3 FSGS“I have FSGS stage 3 kidney disease. Should I be on a renal diet?” Sometimes kidney patients are very confused about their diet. A renal diet should be started as long as they find that they have FSGS. Now let’s have a quick look at renal diet for stage 3 FSGS.

Protein

Protein is an important component of a renal diet. If you have azotemia, you should follow a low protein diet about 0.6-0.8 g/kg per day. If your blood albumin is less than 20 g/L and urine protein is more than 10 g/L, you should follow a high protein diet about 1.0-1.3 g/kg per day for a short term. But generally speaking, FSGS stage 3 patients should restrict protein intake, because too much protein increases GFR and speed up glomerular sclerosis. If you are receiving steroid treatment, you may need a little more protein, because steroids speed up proteolysis.

All in all, how much protein you should take depends on your medical condition. And high quality protein like lean meat, egg white, fish and poultry are preferred.

Salt

You should pay attention to the salt intake when you have severe edema and high blood pressure, because salt can worse both the two symptoms. But if you have no edema or high blood pressure, there is no need for you to restrict it, but a low sodium diet is good for your health.

Other requirements

According to your blood test, you may need to limit the intake of certain elements, such as potassium. Besides, you should add more fresh vegetables and fruits into your diet, because they are high in vitamin C. It can not only boost immune system to protect you from various disease, but also helps the absorption of iron to ease anemia.

A renal diet plays a vital role in slowing down the progression of stage 3 FSGS. If you would like a personalized diet plan, please leave your basic medical condition below. Our doctors will help you make one.
