Why FSGS Patients Need To Limit Salt Intake

Why FSGS Patients Need To Limit Salt IntakeFSGS is the abbreviation of Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis which is a medical term used to describe in what way the kidney is damaged. Sometimes, some patients may be told to limit salt intake by their doctors once being diagnosed with FSGS. However, why FSGS patients need to limit salt intake? Let’s have a look together.

What is the relationship between salt intake and FSGS patients?

As we all know that our kidneys have the function to keep the balance of electrolyte but for FSGS patients, their kidneys can not perform this function normally thus leading to electrolyte disturbance in their body. Salt is rich in sodium and generally speaking, when we have ate a lot of salts, we feel thirsty frequently and this is because our kidneys need to produce more urine to remove sodium from the body. However, if patient’s kidney is damaged or their kidney functions fail to work properly, there is no doubt that excessive sodium will build up in the blood or other areas. Under such a condition, high blood pressure, edema and high sodium level occur easily. So high salt intake is so bad for FSGS patients.

Why FSGS patients need to limit salt intake?

Fortunately, FSGS means some glomeruli are partially damaged, in other words, there are still some healthy kidney tissues exist. Even so, high salt intake also can increase the burden of these healthy kidney tissues and may bring damage to them. In view of this, FSGS patients need to limit salt intake strictly.

However, in our daily life, for FSGS patients, in addition to limit salt intake, there are still other things should be paid more attention to. With different causes of FSGS, we need to take different nursing care, diet and medicines. Are you interested in these things? Feel free to let us know, our dietitians will answer for you carefully.
