What Causes Loss of Appetite with FSGS

What Causes Loss of Appetite with FSGSSome FSGS patients complain that they have poor appetite. Poor appetite affects your body to absorb nutrients so as to make your body weak. What causes loss of appetite with FSGS?

Too much waste products in the blood

FSGS scars your kidneys so that they can not filter waste products from the blood. Those waste may stimulate your stomach, leading to loss of appetite. Besides, high blood urea level is also a contributor to poor appetite, because urease in the intestinal tract can decompose urea nitrogen into ammonia, which may stimulate the gastrointestinal tract, leading to nausea and vomiting so as to affect your appetite.

Insufficient physical activity

With FSGS, you may feel weak, due to anemia, diet restriction, body malaise and other factors. And then you do not want to take part in exercise and just stay in bed. Your appetite can be affected as well when you do not take part in exercise regularly.

Side effects of medications

In order to control FSGS, you may have to take various medications. For example, ACEI and ARBs to lower blood pressure, steroids and immunosuppressants to eliminate proteinuria, diuretics to alleviate edema, etc. Those medicines have many side effects if used for long term, one of which is poor appetite.

Diet restriction

FSGS patients are often required to follow a restricted diet. For example, they have to limit the intake of protein to control proteinuria. If they have high blood pressure and edema, they should restrict sodium intake. Besides, they can not take too much fat and they have to pay attention to intake of other minerals, such as potassium and phosphorus. Those restrictions may deprive of your appetite.
