Low Iron in FSGS Patients: What to Do

Question: I have been suffering from FSGS for 7 years now. I had maybe 8 month free of prednisone. Back on them again but tapering off. My biggest worry is my iron level. It has been very low. What to do?

Low Iron in FSGS Patients: What to DoAnswer: Low iron level can result in anemia, which can cause renal ischemia and anoxia so as to make your condition worse. Therefore, you should take measures as early as possible to improve iron level.

-To supplement iron

It is the direct way to improve iron level. Iron tablets and foods high in iron can be used.

-To supplement copper

Low iron is also because of copper deficiency - iron cannot be absorbed if the body lacks copper. Also, with copper deficiency, a substance called ceruloplasmin, is deficient (it is copper based). And it s deficiency affects glomeruli and worsens Nephrotic Syndrome greatly. In such a case, you may have to supplement copper rather than simply iron.

-To supplement vitamin C

vitamin C helps the body absorb iron at a better rate, while vitamin C also plays an important role in synthesizing red blood cells.

-To improve renal function

The reason why you have low iron and anemia is associated with damaged kidneys greatly. The damaged kidneys can not regulate the electrolyte balance, and they can neither secrete erythropoietin to make blood cells. Besides, the accumulated the wastes in body can shorten lifespan of red blood cells to make iron deficiency worse. Now you are taking prednisone for FSGS treatment. This is only a temporary medical relief. Because it is just to inhibit renal inflammation rather than clear the immune complexes deposited on kidneys. Those immune complexes can trigger the inflammatory reaction now and then. Here we recommend you to try a systemic treatment. It is Toxin-Removing Treatment, also known as Detoxification Therapy. It can dissolve immune complexes and remove them out of body. It can also restore the balance of anti-inflammatory cytokines and pro-inflammatory cytokines to reduce renal inflammation and control the disease from getting worse. Moreover, it can provide the damaged kidneys with enough essential elements to speed up kidney recovery. After about one week’s treatment, edema will fade away. After about half month’s treatment, proteinuria will be reduced, and iron level will be promoted. After about one month’s treatment, FSGS will be under control.
