What Is the Survival Rate of FSGS

What Is the Survival Rate of FSGSWhat is the survival rate of FSGS? It is normal for us to consider about our life span and survival rate once being told to have FSGS (Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis) which is a kidney problem and said to be able to progress to kidney failure if no effective treatment is given. Well, is there an answer for this question?

FSGS is a chronic kidney disease, because the scarred glomeruli can not be repaired. However, in an affected kidney, there are healthy and injured glomeruli apart from scarred one. Scarred glomeruli are dead and they can not be revived again. However, for these injured glomeruli, they can be repaired successfully. For these whose illness is treated effectively and timely, they can live a longer and better life. Besides, apart from medical treatment, there are many other factors that can affect the survival rate of FSGS:

1. Tight control of all the symptoms

Proteinuria and high blood pressure appear easily when kidney is affected by FSGS. Although they are caused by kidney damages, if untreated, they will further damage kidney. In general, the serious the FSGS is, the lower the survival rate of the patients. Therefore, a tight control of all the symptoms is very significant for FSGS patients to have a normal lifespan.

2. Diet is another factor that can affect illness condition and patients’ survivial rate

Although FSGS can not be cured through diet, a well-planed diet plays a very important part for patients to bring their illness condition under control. For an individual with FSGS, what foods to eat or avoided is based on his specific illnes. That is the reason why it is hard to find an accurate food lists that are available for all the FSGS patients.

3. Avoid cold and infection

Frequent cold and infection are regarded as the leading two risk factors for FSGS patients. For these whose illness has been controlled well, they may suffer from kidney failure suddenly within several months due to frequent cold and infection. Therefore, avoiding frequent cold and infection is also very important for FSGS patients to increase their survival rate.

The survival rate of FSGS differs from case to case due to the difference of illness condition. So far it has been maintained to be a refractory illness, but this does not mean there is nothing we can do but waiting for death. For people who are diagnosed with FSGS, it is quite possible for them to increase their survival rate and lifespan through effective and timely medical treatment and nursing care.
