How Does FSGS Affect Us

How Does FSGS Affect Us“I’m suffering with FSGS and I just want to know the impacts. I am 27 and female. Thanks” This is a message I got when I logged in my Facebook. FSGS, the abbreviation of Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, is a common cause of Nephrotic Syndrome among children and adolescent. well, what will happen with diagnosis of FSGS? And how does it affect us?

FSGS is a kind of kidney problem. In many areas, the diagnosis of it is based on renal biopsy which is an examination that can help us find out in what way our kidney is damaged and how serious it is damaged. In the very beginning of FSGS, only a small part of kidney tissues are injured, so we may have no obvious physical discomforts. Also, for this reason, many patients do not know they are suffering FSGS until their illness developed to a very serious stage.

FSGS is not life-threatening and causes no serious and bad influence on us in early stage. But with the deterioration of kidney condition, various symptoms like massive proteinuria, swollen eyelid, swollen face, swollen legs, fatigue, poor appetite, nausea, vomiting and itchy skin begin to appear. All these signs appear as our internal organs like gastrointestinal tract are affected.

Kidney is the organ that takes charge of filtering blood. During this process, harmful substances like creatinine and urea nitrogen are excreted as urine with excess fluid. When kidney function is impaired due to FSGS, these harmful substances will build up in the body, They circulate with blood and may reach any part of our body. Under the effects of these harmful substances, internal organs are damaged easily. For FSGS patients whose illness has developed to kidney failure stage, there are lots of toxins in their blood. Therefore, they are more likely to suffer from these discomforts.

FSGS affects us in many ways and the most serious complication is heart failure which may deprive patients’ life at any time. Therefore, it is not dangerous to be diagnosed with FSGS, but if we left it alone, our life will be threatened seriously.
