Do FSGS Patients Need Blood Transfusion to Improve Anemia

Do FSGS Patients Need Blood Transfusion to Improve AnemiaAnemia is a common complication of kidney disease, including FSGS. It means there are not enough red blood cells in the blood. Do FSGS patients need blood transfusion to improve anemia?

Why FSGS causes anemia?

Besides blood purification, kidney has another important function, that is, to secrete erythropoietin (EPO). EPO is to stimulate bone marrows to make red blood cells. When your kidneys are damaged duet to FSGS, they can not secrete enough EPO, leading to renal anemia.

You had better not transfuse blood with FSGS.

Renal anemia does not result from massive haemorrhage, so simply blood transfusion can not solve this problem. At the same time, the accumulated waste products in the body does not only inhibit the production of red blood cells, but also impair cytomembrane of red blood cells, speeding up their death. Besides, poisonous substance in the blood such as erythropoiesis inhibiting factor can block the function of EPO, which can make the condition worse.

In addition, poor appetite, diarrhea and some other factors can make your body lose nutrient elements, such as iron, folate, and protein so as to worsen your anemia.

If the transfused blood is not fresh, the dead red blood cells in it can worsen the accumulation of urea so as to increase the workload of kidneys.

What to do with renal anemia for FSGS patients?

When hemoglobin is more than 6g, it is unnecessary for you to transfuse blood. When hemoglobin is less than 6g, it can cause severe anoxia. In such case, you can transfuse a little blood to improve anoxia. When you have obvious bleeding, you can also transfuse some fresh blood or platelet suspension.

If you do not have the above conditions, you can supplement EPO, iron tablets, folate and so on to improve anemia.

Do FSGS patients need blood transfusion to improve anemia? It depends on your medical condition. If you would like to know more information about FSGS, please feel free to contact online doctor or leave a message below.
