Is Stomach Pain A Side Effect of Cellcept for FSGS Patients

Question: My daughter was diagnosed with FSGS. She just started cellcept on Wednesday. Since then, she has been doubling over with pain in her stomach. She is refusing to eat much and is gassy as well. Can this be a side effect of cellcept? And how to help her relieve the pain?

Is Stomach Pain A Side Effect of Cellcept for FSGS PatientsAnswer: Stomach pain and stomach bloating are common complaints of FSGS patients with steroid and immunosuppressant treatment.

Cellcept can cause stomach problems for FSGS

Cellcept (mycophenolate mofetil) is an immunosuppressant, which can lower your body’s immune system and block the inflammation in the kidneys so as to prevent further kidney damage. But it indeed has many side effects, for example, it stimulates the stomach, leading stomach problems. Besides stomach pain and stomach bloating, there may be upset stomach, vomit, nausea, diarrhea, etc.

As to the stomach problems, we often suggest the patients take stomach medicine together which helps protect stomach so as to reduce side effects.

Is there alternative treatment than cellcept for FSGS patients?

Stomach problems are just one of the side effects of cellcept. It can also cause swelling in ankles or feet, high blood pressure, severe headache, blurred vision, buzzing in ears, shortness of breath, etc. If you have had enough the side effects of cellcept, you can use some natural treatment to counteract their side effects.

In our hospital, we often use Traditional Chinese Medicine together with western medicine to control FSGS. In TCM, there are many therapies, such as Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy, Medicated Bath, Mai Kang Composition, Circle Therapy, Enema Therapy, Steam Therapy, Acupuncture, Moxibustion, Medicated Soup, etc. Because different patients have different medical conditions, we will change those therapies and their dosage accordingly. They can help western medicine to be used to the most. And they can also set up a good blood environment for kidney self-healing. After a period of treatment, there will be great improvement on your kidney function. Moreover, you can gradually tamper or even give up steroid and immunosuppressant treatment.
