Is There A Diet to Help FSGS Patients to Control Proteinuria

Question: I have FSGS since 2009 and so far it has been controlled and I loss 1.5 - 1.9 grams of protein and we are still trying to control it with high blood pressure bills and please let me know if there is a diet to help me at least.

Is There A Diet to Help FSGS Patients to Control ProteinuriaAnswer: Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a kidney disorder in which scar tissues develop on some parts of glomeruli. The protein leakage is usually associated with kidney inflammation. Because of kidney inflammation, the permeability of capillaries increases so that protein which should be retained in the body leaks into urine. You said that your FSGS has been controlled, but there is still protein in urine. That indicates that there are still inflammatory reaction in the kidney. High blood pressure bills, such as ACEI and ARBs can help you lower the pressure to blood vessels so as to reduce protein leakage, but they are not effective enough.

Diet can help you to certain extent. But what you can eat and can not eat will change over time, depending on how much kidney function you have and other factors, such as having diabetes. Generally speaking, FSGS patients should follow a low protein diet. A low protein diet can reduce the burden on kidneys and reduce protein leakage, but it does not mean you should avoid protein intake, because our body needs protein to maintain its normal function. High quality protein such as lean meat, fish, egg white and poultry without skin are good choices for you. Besides, you should eat more fresh vegetables and fruits, because they can provide your body with essential nutrients, such as dietary fiber, minerals, vitamins and so on. If you have swelling and high blood pressure, you should limit the intake of sodium.

If you really want to get rid of the proteinuria, you had better choose a natural treatment to eliminate kidney inflammation. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment such as Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy, Mai Kang Mixture and Medicated Foot Bath can help you decompose the immune complexes to reduce inflammation and degrade extracellular matrix to stop kidney fibrosis. They can also set up a good blood environment for kidney self-healing. With the improvement of kidney function, protein leakage will decrease.
