Average Lifespan of FSGS Patients on Dialysis

Average Lifespan of FSGS Patients on DialysisWhat is the average lifespan of FSGS patients on dialysis? Many FSGS patients believe there is no treatment option for them to live a normal life again apart from kidney transplant if they have started dialysis. However, as there are many patients on waiting list, some FSGS patients could not help thinking how long they can live. Well, what is the lifespan of FSGS patients who are on dialysis and can not find a matched kidney.

Dialysis is a difficult medical treatment to endure on such a regular basis. It helps to purify blood, but while this process, many side effects can be caused like low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting and restless leg syndrome. Besides, the longer time they do dialysis, the lower their survival rate. It is said about 20% of patients die in the first year and this is closely associated with their age, illness condition and physical condition. For yong FSGS patients, they survive longer than older people if they start dialysis at the same time. Clinical statistics show that 88% of those under the age of 20 will live through five years. 71% of patients between 20 and 44 years old will survive 5 years of dialysis and for these with age 44 to 64, 44% of them can live as long as 5 years, but for FSGS patients with age 65 to 74, only 21% of them can survive through 5 years.

In addition, for FSGS patients who are on dialysis, they can not stop dialysis frequency without improving kidney function. Kidney is able to clear wastes and toxins away from the our body. When kidneys shut down, toxins build up. Dialysis helps to clean blood, so as to protect internal organs from being affected. Therefore, when dialysis patients stop dialysis, their life will be threatened seriously. Clicial studies report dialysis patients can only live one to four week if thjey stop dialysis without getting kidney function improved. Therefore, it is necessary for FSGS patients to learn about this fact and do not stop dialysis casually.
