Can FSGS Patients Be Eligible for A Kidney Transplant

Can FSGS patients be eligible for a kidney transplant? When it comes to kidney failure, kidney transplant is the treatment that we have to mention, because it is regarded as the best way and the only way to live a normal life again. But in reality, many patients can not get rid of dialysis and kidney problem at all due to the high reoccurrence rate of illness, even if they do kidney transplant. Well, for FSGS patients, are they eligible for a kidney transplant.

FSGS (Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis) is an illness that causes kidney failure easily. Therefore, many FSGS patients begin to think about kidney transplant after the diagnosis and hope they can get far away from the turturous life brought by dialysis. However, the fact is in many cases, illness comes back again several years later. According to clinical statistics, the avereage reoccurrence rate of FSGS is as high as 30 percent. Why is this?

The diagnosis of FSGS is based on renal bilopty which is regarded as the most accurate test for kidney disease. In this test, a tiny part of kidney tissue is taken out of the body for observation. For FSGS patients, less 50 percent of their glomeruli are found to be injured. FSGS can be primary or secondary. For patients who get FSGS due to toxins, viral infection or hyperfiltration injury, they are unlikely to get this kind of kidney problem again after the surgery if the causes of kidney damages can be removed successfully. However, for these with primary FSGS, they run a high risk for second FSGS as kidney transplant can not help to remove real cause of kidney damages at all. Therefore, they healthy kidney put into patients’ body will be affected sooner or later in such a case.

From the above explanation, we can find that FSGS is eligible for a kidney transplant, but the key is to find out the real cause of their kidney damages and then get it removed before the surgery. Only in this way, can second FSGS be avoided fundamentally.
