FSGS: What Will Happen If Medicine Do Not Work

Question: Hi, I have a close relative just diagnosed with FSGS. She has been given medication with not too much of an outcome if not successfully. I am trying to find out what will happen if the medicines do not work. Is dialysis an option?

FSGS: What Will Happen If Medicine Do Not WorkAnswer: What will happen if medicine do not work for FSGS patients? FSGS (Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis) is a rare disease that attacks the kidney’s filtering system causing serious scarring. For a normal adult, he has two kidneys in his lower back. In the kidney, glomeruli work as a filter and after that, some nutrient leaked out from glomeruli are reabsorbed by renal tubules. In FSGS, this filtration system is affected, leading to the buildup of toxins in the blood. In early stage of FSGS, only a very small part of kidney tissues are injured, so patients may experience no symptoms. However, with the deterioration of illness, much more kidney tissues will be injured and kidney condition becomes worser and worser. Under such a case, various symptoms appear and if the medicines do not work. Illness progresses to kidney failure stage directly.

FSGS is not life-threatening in early stage, but once develops to kidney failure stage, it will cause many deadly complications like heart failure. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death among kidney failure patients. Besides, when illness runs to kidney failure, patients will experience lots of torturous symptoms like skin itching, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue and sleep problem and so on.

In dialysis an option? Dialysis helps to purify blood which should be done by kidney. However, it is only effective in removing small molecule materials. Also, with the duration of dialysis, their survival rate decreases severely. Therefore, dialysis is an option to keep being alive when FSGS develops to kidney failure, but it is not the best and the only one treatment option.
