Will My Kidneys Fail Within One or Two Years With IgA Nephropathy

Question: I am suffering from IgA Nephropathy last 8 months. I have protein in urine and swelling. Will my kidneys fail within one or two years?

Will My Kidneys Fail Within One or Two Years With IgA NephropathyAnswer: IgA Nephropathy(Berger’s Disease) is the most common cause of primary glomerulonephritis in the world. Generally speaking, it is very benign. About 50 % of affected patients develop end stage renal disease in 20-25 years. The remaining patients enter a sustained clinical remission or have persistent low-grade hematuria or proteinuria. Proteinuria and high blood pressure have been shown to be an adverse prognostic factor in IgA Nephropathy. As we can see, you have protein in urine. But it does not mean your kidneys will fail within one or two years.

Conventional treatment for IgA Nephropathy is to use steroids and other immunosuppressants to inhibit kidney inflammation and reduce protein leakage so as to prevent further kidney damage. As to high blood pressure, ACEI and ARBs are often used. But they have many side effects in the long run. Immunotherapy is a combination of western medicine and Chinese medicine, which has few side effects. It can block abnormal immune reaction in the kidneys to prevent further damage. It can also cleanse the cycling immune complexes and inflammatory chemicals to reduce kidney inflammation. Besides, it can increase the kidneys’ tolerance to immune complexes to prevent inflammation and strengthen your immune system to help you fight against the disease. After a period of treatment, your damaged kidneys can regain their ability and then you can avoid kidney failure.

With timely and effective treatment, your kidneys can still work for many years. Besides medical treatment, you should adjust your lifestyle to protect the remaining kidney function.
