Should I Take Amino Acids with IgA Nephropathy

Should I Take Amino Acids with IgA Nephropathy“I have IgA Nephropathy, should I take amino acids?” Some IgA Nephropathy patients have such a doubt. If you would like to know the answer, go on reading.

IgA Nephropathy patients should take amino acids.

Amino acid is the basic unit of protein and protein is an important component of body. From this point of view, all of people should take amino acids. However, IgA Nephropathy patients often have a strict protein intake, because the damaged kidneys lose the ability to remove protein waste and it starts to build up in the blood. Now let’s see how to take amino acids healthily for IgA Nephropathy.

Amino acids are classified into essential amino acids and non-essential amino acids. Our body can produce non-essential amino acids by itself, while essential amino acids can not be formed. Therefore, we should take essential amino acids rather than non-essential amino acids. Food high in essential amino acids is called high quality protein. Egg white, milk, lean meat, poultry without skin, fish and so on all belong to such a kind of protein. And you had better avoid plant protein, such as beans and nuts.

How much protein you should take with IgA Nephropathy?

Dietary protein intake for patients with IgA Nephropathy is based on the stages of kidney disease, nutrition status and body size. There are some reference data. In the early stage of IgA Nephropathy, there is no need for you to limit protein intake. In stage 3, 0.6-0.8 g/kg protein intake is OK. In stage 4, 0.4-0.6 g/kg protein is recommended. In stage 5, 0.2-0.4 g/kg protein can satisfy the need of body. If you are on dialysis, you should take 1.2 g/kg protein per day.
