Is It OK for IgA Nephropathy Patients to Eat Fermented Food

Is It OK for IgA Nephropathy Patients to Eat Fermented FoodIgA Nephropathy patients have many food restrictions, such as protein restriction and sodium restriction. Is it OK for IgA Nephropathy patients to eat fermented food?

What are fermented foods?

Fermented foods are foods that have been through a process of lactofermentation in which natural bacteria feed on the sugar and starch in the food creating lactic acid. During this process, a lot of beneficial substances come into being, such as enzymes, b-vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, and various strains of probiotics. The fermented foods common to see in the daily include:

-Alcoholic drinks, such as yellow wine, fruit wine, beer, liquor, etc.

-Dairy products, such as yogurt, cultured butter, kumiss, cheese, etc.

-Bean products, such as fermented bean curd, fermented soya beans, natto, etc.

-Fermented vegetables, such as pickles and Chinese sauerkraut.

-Condiment, such as vinegar, salted and fermented soya paste, sauce, sweetening agent, odorant, aginomoto, etc.

IgA Nephropathy and fermented food

Generally speaking, fermented food helps you absorb more nutrients in the foods you eat. And they can also improve your digestion, increase vitamin absorption, alleviate constipation, support the beneficial bacteria in our digestive tract, etc. For example, apple vinegar is often used by many kidney patients to improve their medical condition.

However, some fermented foods should be limited for IgA Nephropathy patients. Alcohol in alcoholic drinks is not good for kidney recovery. Fermented vegetables are high in salt, which may worsen edema and high blood pressure. Bean products are high in protein, which may increase your blood urea level and worsen proteinuria. Some dairy products are high in phosphorus, too much of which causes skin itch for kidney patients.

Therefore, whether it is OK for you to eat fermented food or not depends on your medical condition. To acquire a specific answer, please contact online doctor or leave a message below.
