Can I Have High Protein Diet if I Have IgA Nephropathy

Can I Have High Protein Diet if I Have IgA NephropathyNowadays more and more people realize the important role diet plays in treating IgA Nephropathy. But they still do not have a clear mind about how to eat healthily. In this article, we will discuss about whether IgA Nephropathy patients can have high protein diet or not. In fact, this depends on the patients’ medical condition.

If you have hypoproteinemia, you may be suggested to follow a high protein diet.

When massive protein leaks into the urine, there is less protein in the blood, leading to hypoproteinemia. Hypoproteinemia will decrease plasma colloid osmotic pressure so that fluid flows into tissue space, causing edema. Moreover, your immune system will also be weakened because of protein deficiency. In such case, you should follow a high protein diet (about 1-1.5 g/kg*d) to supplement the lost protein. But the precondition is that your kidney function is still normal.

Generally speaking, IgA Nephropathy patients should follow a low protein diet.

During protein metabolism, a lot of wastes such as urea are produced, which are passed out of the body by kidneys. High protein diet increases blood flow into the kidneys and enhance glomerular filtration rate so as to increase the workload of kidneys. Overtime, they will cause further damage to the kidneys. Besides, it worsens proteinuria. Therefore, you had better follow a low protein diet about 0.7-1 g/kg*d. When there is kidney function impairment, you should limit the protein intake into 0.65 g/kg*d. But if the patient is a child, there is no need to limit their intake of protein, because they need protein to grow and develop into adult.
