Can I take soy milk with IgA Nephropathy? This question is posted by a patient who is newly diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy. IgA Nephropathy is a chronic kidney problem which progresses over time. Improper diet will accelerate illness progression and push IgA Nephropathy sufferers to dialysis. Therefore, IgA Nephropathy patients especially care about their daily diet, so as to avoid foods that may do harm for their kidney. Well, for IgA Nephropathy patients, is soy milk ok?
Soy milk is a very health-beneficial drinking for us owing to its abundant nutrients. However, for IgA Nephropathy patients, they are not suggested to drink too much soy milk. But why is this?
Soy milk is a plant milk produced by soaking dry soybeans and grinding them with water. Soy milk is rich in vegetable proteins which have the advantage that they cause less loss of calcium through kidney. Viewed from this point of view, it is very good for IgA Nephropathy. Protein is the basic of life and we can say no protein, no life. However, for IgA Nephropathy patients, they need to limit protein intake, because high protein consumption will add extra burden on kidney.
IgA Nephropathy is an illness that impairs kidney function gradually. With the deterioration of illness, kidney function becomes lesser and lesser. Impaired kidney can not bear heavy burden, so protein intake changes with the change of kidney condition. In general, 0.6 to 0.8grams of protein is needed per kilogram of body weight per day by IgA Nephropathy patients if their illness is in stage 3. However, if their illness develops to stage 4 or stage 5, they should limit protein intake to 0.2-0.4 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. Also, if they are on dialysis, 1.2 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight per day is needed because dialysis may bring away some protein from the body.
Lastly, soy milk is very health-beneficial, but due to impaired kidney condition, IgA Nephropathy patients need to limit the intake of soy milk, so as to avoid further worsening of illness.
