What happens if IgA Nephropathy patients keep having high protein consumption?

Protein is the basic of life and it can be found throughout the body like in muscle, bone, skin and hair. In our body, proteins are consumed and during this process, urea nitrogen is produced. Urea nitrogen is a harmful substance and needs to be excreted through kidney. Therefore, usually the more protein we take, the more wastes that need to be discharged by kidney.

For IgA Nephropathy patients who need to limit protein consumption, if they keep on having high protein intake, their kidneys have to bear heavy burden, which may cause quick deterioration of illness. IgA Nephropathy is not life-threatening at all, but if we fail to protect residual kidney function, kidney failure will be finally caused. At that time, life might be deprived at any time.

How much protein is required for patients with mild IgA Nephropathy?

How much protein is needed by patients with mild IgA Nephropathy? In general, if illness stays in stage 1 or stage 2, 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day is needed. However, for those whose illness is in stage 3, 0.6 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight per day is necessary. That is to say, IgA Nephropathy patients need to limit their protein intake according to their specific illness condition.

Besides, as high quality protein add less burden on kidney, to meet the basic demand of our body to protein, IgA Nephropathy patients can eat some foods with high quality protein like lean meat, fish, milk and egg white and so on. Also, they need to calculate the amount.
