Diet Restrictions for IgA Nephropathy Patients

Diet Restrictions for IgA Nephropathy PatientsIgA Nephropathy (Berger’s Disease) is a chronic kidney disease, which progresses slowly over many years. In the long run, you should not only depend on medical treatment, but also follow a healthy lifestyle. In healthy lifestyle, diet plays an important part. In the following, let’s have a look at diet restrictions for IgA Nephropathy patients.

Restrict protein intake

If your kidney function has been impaired by IgA Nephropathy or you have massive proteinuria, you should restrict protein intake, because too much protein intake can put extra stress on kidneys. How much protein you can eat depends on your remaining kidney function, weight and some other factors. Generally speaking, in the early stage of IgA Nephropathy, 0.6-0.8 g/kg protein intake is OK and in the stage, 0.4-0.6 g/kg protein intake is recommended.

Restrict sodium intake

If you have high blood pressure or swelling, you should restrict sodium intake, because sodium can retain fluid in the body, which can increase blood volume so as to raise blood pressure further. Generally speaking, you should control sodium intake into 3-5 g per day. In severe case, you should avoid sodium intake.

Restrict fat intake

Fat intake can raise blood cholesterol level so as to increase your risk of heart disease. Heart disease is the main cause of death for kidney patients, so it is necessary for you to restrict food high in fat, such as fried chips and other junk food.

Restrict certain mineral intake

According to your blood test, you may have to restrict certain mineral. For example, if your potassium level is high, you should restrict potassium intake and if your phosphorus level is high, you should restrict phosphorus level.

Though you should follow a restricted diet with IgA Nephropathy, it does not mean you should avoid their intake, because our body needs them to maintain the normal function. For more information, please contact online doctor or leave a message below.
