IgA Nephropathy: What to Eat to Make My Creatinine Level Normal

Question: Doctor, I am confused of what to eat so my creatinine will in the normal range only. My creatinine is 1.23 and I know that it is in borderline. I was diagnosed of having IgA Nephropathy since 2010 and my creatinine is always in the borderline level. I am so afraid that it will shoot up.

IgA Nephropathy: What to Eat to Make My Creatinine Level NormalAnswer: Normal creatinine level ranges from 0.5 to 1.2 mg/dL. When your kidneys are healthy, creatinine level is not affected by what you eat. But if your kidney function declines, creatinine can not be passed out of the body. In such case, if you do not pay attention to food, it is likely for creatinine level to go up further. Now your IgA Nephropathy is still in the early stage. The basic dietary requirement is to not put extra stress on kidneys. And the food you eat should be beneficial for kidney function protection and improvement. For example,

If you have proteinuria or declined GFR, you should follow a low protein diet and eat some high quality protein such as egg white and lean meat to satisfy the need of body. If you have swelling, you had better limit the intake of sodium. Besides, you should add more fresh vegetables and fruits, because their vitamin C can strengthen immunity and dietary fiber helps lower cholesterol level and improve constipation.

If you really want to make your creatinine in the normal range only, what you should do is not only to follow a healthy diet, but also seek treatment aggressively to improve kidney function. IgA Nephropathy is caused by IgA immune complexes depositing in the kidneys, so treatment should cleanse those immune complexes from the kidneys. Immunotherapy is a combination of western medicine and Chinese medicine, which can cleanse the cycling immune complexes from the blood to reduce their deposition. It can also increase the kidneys’ tolerance to immune complexes so that even if there are immune complexes, they do not cause kidney inflammation easily. All in all, Immunotherapy can help you protect your kidneys from being damaged further.
