Ways to Lower Proteinuria for IgA Nephropathy Patients

Question: I am diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy. My proteinuria is around 4g and I was looking for ways to lower it other than taking an ACE inhibitor.

Ways to Lower Proteinuria for IgA Nephropathy PatientsAnswer: Proteinuria is a common symptom of IgA Nephropathy. It results from the damage of glomerular filtration barrier. There are many ways for you to reduce proteinuria.

ACE inhibitors is often used to lower blood pressure. But it can also reduce proteinuria via decreasing the oppression to blood vessel wall. Moreover, it can help you protect kidney function. If you do not want to eating ACE inhibitors, you can choose the other ways.

Steroid treatment

Steroid is the most common used medicine to control proteinuria. It can suppress the inflammatory reaction in the kidneys and decrease the permeability of capillaries so as to reduce protein leakage. But this kind of medicine can not be used for long term, because it has many side effects.

Chinese medicine

In the long run, you should choose some natural therapies. Chinese medicine is one of them. There are many kinds of therapies in Chinese medicine, such as Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy, Foot Bath, Full Bath, Circle Therapy, Enema Therapy, Steam Therapy and Moxibustion. They can cleanse waste and toxins in the blood. They can also remove inflammatory factors such as immune complexes from the blood to eliminate inflammation. Moreover, they can expand blood vessels and remove stasis to increase blood flow into the kidneys, which can improve ischemia and anoxia in the kidneys and help kidney self-healing. When the damaged kidneys are repaired, it stops protein leakage.

Diet therapy

Besides medical treatment, you should follow a diet therapy, which helps control proteinuria as well. Low protein diet is needed. But to satisfy the needs of body, you should choose some high quality protein to eat, such as egg white, lean meat and fish. Apart from protein, you should balance fat, vitamins, minerals, fiber and so on in the diet.
