IgA Nephropathy, Both Feet Swell: Is It Very Serious

Question: I have IgA Nephropathy. Now both my feet swell. Is it very serious?

IgA Nephropathy, Both Feet Swell: Is It Very SeriousAnswer: IgA Nephropathy is the most common glomerulonephritis in the world. 40%-45% IgA Nephropathy patients have gross hematuria or microscopic hematuria clinically. And 35%-40% patients have microscopic hematuria and foamy urine and they show Nephrotic Syndrome or kidney failure. Most of the patients have swelling.

Why IgA Nephropathy patients have swelling?

-When your GFR becomes low, your kidneys can not remove water and sodium from your body timely, leading to swelling.

-Your GFR becomes low, while the reabsorption function of renal tubules is still normal. In such case, your renal tubules reabsorb excess water and sodium, leading to swelling.

-If you have increased capillary hydrostatic pressure, fluid in capillaries will flow to tissue space, leading to swelling.

-If you have massive proteinuria, swelling also occurs, because protein leakage decreases plasma colloid osmotic pressure so as to increase the filtration of fluid in capillaries, while fluid reabsorption from tissue space reduces, leading to swelling.

There may be other causes of swelling, such as steroid treatment. Space limited, so we do not list all of them here. If you want to know, please contact online doctor or leave a message below.

How to deal with feet swelling for IgA Nephropathy?

-Have a good rest and avoid strenuous exercise.

-In diet, you should limit the intake of salt and protein.

-Use diuretics when necessary. This kind of medicine can increase urine output so as to reduce swelling.

-If you have massive proteinuria, you should eliminate proteinuria as early as possible. ACEI, ARB, steroids and immunosuppressants are the most common used medicine for proteinuria.

-The fundamental way is to repair the damaged kidneys and improve kidney function. Considering IgA Nephropathy is an autoimmune disease, we should set about regulating the abnormal immune system. Immunotherapy is such a therapy. It can cleanse immune complexes from the kidneys and increase the kidneys’ tolerance to immune complexes so as to prevent inflammation. It can also set up a good blood environment for kidney self-healing. When kidney function improves, your kidneys can manage the excess fluid in your body.

Feet swelling indicates that your IgA Nephropathy is worsening. Therefore, importance should be attached. Hope you can live a normal life with IgA Nephropathy.
