The Symptoms of IgA Nephropathy in Children

IgA Nephropathy is an autoimmune renal disorder, which progresses chronically for years, even for decades. It can be diagnosed in crowd of all ages including children. The immune deposition in glomeruli leads to the waste and excess water can’t be released. Eventually, it may cause kidney failure. Parents should pay attention to the abnormal variation of children.

As IgA Nephropathy developing, the children may experience the following symptoms, which parents should have a look.


Hematuria is the most obvious symptom associated with a cough, respiratory infection or fever. It may be divided into microscopic and gross hematuria. The former can be only decected under microscope and gross hematuria occurs when large amounts of red blood cells leak into urine. The color of this urine may be red, brown or tea-colored.


Proteinuria refers to the presence of protein in the urine. Proteinuria along with hematuria are the most common symptoms of IgA nephropathy in children. As the inflammatory response can destruct the filtering units in kidneys, proteins will leak the filtering system and ends in urine.


Fatigue is one symptom affecting children with IgA nephropathy. In severe case, it can affect the patients’ daily activities like schoolwork. Fatigue is sometimes associated with a sore throat, headache or slight fever.

Swelling in hands and feet

Swelling can be firstly seen in hands and feet. Without control, it will spread to every part of their body. It is mainly due to retention of fluids and sodium. Additionally, loss of protein in urine is also a cause of swelling in IgA nephropathy.

High blood pressure

High blood pressure is one of symptoms of IgA nephropathy in children. Without control, it can accelerate the rate at which renal function declines.
