Can I Take Melatonin for Sleep with IgA Nephropathy

Question: Can I take melatonin to help me with sleep? I am on several medicines (newly diagnosed). 60 mg/day of prednisone is greatly impacting my sleep. Any advice?

Can I Take Melatonin for Sleep with IgA NephropathyAnswer: Sleeping problem is a common complaint of IgA Nephropathy patients. If you can not have a good rest with IgA Nephropathy, it may greatly affect your prognosis.

First, let’s have a look at Melatonin.

Melatonin is a manmade form of a hormone produced in the brain that helps regulate your sleep and wake cycle, which is often used to ease insomnia, boost the immune system, lower blood pressure and extend life. But it will make your pineal gland produce less of your own for a while. After you stop it, it takes a few weeks for this gland to start producing normal levels. And it is not suitable for everyone to take melatonin. Therefore, you had better talk with your doctor, who can guide you on melatonin use.

In fact, you can do the following things to help you improve sleeping quality.

-Take your prednisone dose in the morning. Because the highest prednison excretion of our body is in the morning (somewhere between 8 and 9), so this would be the perfect time to take your medicine, which has minimal adverse reaction on your sleep quality.

-Drink some sleepy time tea, such as chamomile tea.

-Get on a sleep schedule. Bed at the same time and up at the same time. This helps a lot.

-You can also combine Chinese medicine with prednisone. They make up respective shortcomings. Immunotherapy is such a therapy, which can cleanse immunoglobulin A immune complexes from the blood and increase the kidneys’ tolerance to immune complexes so as to eliminate kidney inflammation. This therapy can also block abnormal immune reaction to reduce the production of IgA. Moreover, it can improve blood circulation to help kidney self-healing. After a period of treatment, you can gradually reduce or stop the use of prednisone and your kidney function can also be improved.

Can I take melatonin for sleep with IgA Nephropathy? It depends on your medical condition. If you want to get an answer, please chat with online doctor. We are very glad to help you.
