Is There Any Likelihood That the Alopecia Is Related to IgA Nephropathy

Question: Hi. I am a 53-year-old male with Biopsy-confirmed IGA nephritis. My GFR recently dropped to 32 and I have had gout twice in the last month, never having had it before. I have recently developed alopecia on my face and head. Is there any likelihood that the alopecia is related to my kidney disease?

Is There Any Likelihood That the Alopecia Is Related to IgA NephropathyAnswer: IgA Nephritis (also known as Berger’s Disease) is the most common form of glomerulonephritis in the world. It impairs your kidney function gradually without timely and effective treatment. From your declining GFR, we can see that your IgA Nephropathy keeps worsening. Therefore, importance should be attached.

As to gout for IgA Nephropathy patients

Gout is a common complication of IgA Nephropathy. With the impairment of kidney function, uric acid builds up in the blood. When their concentration is very high, they form into crystal and deposit in the joints, leading to gout.

As to alopecia for IgA Nephropathy patients

Alopecia is a common complication of kidney patients. It is usually associated with the medications you use. Steroids and immunosuppressants are the common used drugs for IgA Nephropathy patients to inhibit kidney inflammation and prevent further kidney damage, but they have many side effects. Alopecia may be a side effect of them. Besides, restricted diet may make you not get enough nutrients for hair, which can cause hair loss as well. And stress, unhealthy emotion, infection, endocrine dyscrasia and so on are also common contributors to alopecia. Therefore, your alopecia is closely associated with your IgA Nephropathy.

Gout and alopecia are just parts of clinical manifestations of IgA Nephropathy. If you want to lead a normal life with IgA Nephropathy and reduce its symptoms and complications, you should repair the damaged kidneys and improve kidney function. Immunotherapy is a combination of western medicine and Chinese medicine, which can cleanse cycling immune complexes and inflammatory factors from the blood to reduce kidney inflammation. It can also increase kidneys’ tolerance to immune complexes to prevent kidney inflammation. In addition, it can strengthen your immune system to help you fight against the disease.
