Can You Eat Normally After Kidney Transplant in IgA Nephropathy

Can You Eat Normally After Kidney Transplant in IgA NephropathyCan you eat normally after kidney transplant in IgA Nephropathy? Kidney transplant is regarded as the best treatment method for kidney failure patients to live a normal life again, because they think they can eat freely and stay far away from dialysis and oral medications after the surgery. Is this true? For IgA Nephropathy patients, can they eat normally after kidney transplant?

High reoccurrence rate of IgA Nephropathy after kidney transplant

IgA Nephropathy is an illness associated with immune deficiency. Diagnosis of IgA Nephropathy is always accompanied with symptoms of hematuria, proteinuria or high blood pressure which can be controlled well with general treatment. However, as immune disorder is not normalized, IgA Nephropathy keeps progressing and finally develops to kidney failure.

Kidney transplant is a medical surgery in which a healthy kidney is put into patients’ body to replace damaged one to work. It is a way for kidney failure patients to start a normal life again and some of them indeed live their rest life without being affected by kidney problem. They can eat what they like and without worring if the foods will add extra burden on kidney. However, for IgA Nephropathy patients, kidney transplant is not an ideal treatment, as it is a kind of kidney problem that comes back easily after kidney transplant. According to clinical statistic date, about 50% of patients who do kidney transplant due to IgA Nephropathy will develop this kind of kidney problem again within 10 years and the rest of them will be affected again by 10 to 20 years.

Can you eat normally after kidney transplant in IgA Nephropathy?

Since the new kidney is affected easily again by IgA Nephropathy after kidney transplant, it is necessary for patients who did surgery to be careful about their daily diet, so as to lower their risk for second IgA Nephropathy.

In daily life, to achieve the goal of protecting kidney, they need to follow dietary principles that can help them reduce kidney burden like low-salt and proper protein intake (0.8 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day). Besides, do physical exercises regularly, so as to improve immunity and prevent cold and infection effectively.

Lastly, kidney transplant is a way for patients who are on dialysis due to IgA Nephropathy to get rid of dialysis, but it is not the best choice. For patients who still have a certain residual kidney function, they can try Immunotherapy and Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy which can help to improve kidney function well. These two treatments are recommended not only because they are effective in treating IgA Nephroapthy, but also because they are safe and cause no side effects during the whole treatment process. Additional, when impaired kidney function is improved, their diet lilimation will not be as strict as before.
