What Is the Alarming Creatinine Level for IgA Nephropathy

What Is the Alarming Creatinine Level for IgA NephropathyWhat is the alarming creatinine level for IgA Nephropathy? If you concern about this topic, please read on to find the answer:

1. What is the normal serum creatinine level?

Serum creatinine level is an important indicator for kidney condition. Normal creatinine level ranges depend on age, gender and other health factors. But generally speaking, normal range of creatinine in a healthy adult male is 0.6 to 1.2mg/dL, 0.5 to 1.1mg/dL for adult female and 0.2 to 1mg/dL for children. Additional, for people who has had a kidney removed, it is normal for them to have serum creatinine level as high as 1.8mg/dL.

2. How does IgA Nephropathy cause elevation of creatinine level in blood?

IgA Nephropathy can cause elevation of serum creatinine level because it is an illness that can damage kidney directly. IgA is the abbreviation of Immunoglobulin A which is an antibody and helps us fight against harmful substances in normal cases. However, due to immune deficiency, large amounts of IgA are produced by our body and some of them can not function normally. In cases of IgA Nephropathy, these abnormal IgA antibodies deposit in kidney, leading to inflammation which can cause damages on surrounding kidney tissues.

Creatinine is just one of the wastes and normally excreted out of the body through kidney. Kidney works through a group of healthy kidney tissues. When some of these tissues are damaged seriously and can not function well, kidney function declines. Consequently, large amounts of creatinine build up in the blood, leading to the elevation of serum creatinine level.

3. What is the alarming creatinine level for IgA Nephropathy?

Many IgA Nephropathy patients hold the opinion that they should not be alarmed until their creatinine level in blood is raised to be higher than 5, because dialysis is usually recommended at that time. Actually, it is only partly true.

On the basis of clinical studies, when only a small group of kidney tissues are damaged, serum creatinine level does not increase at all because the residual kidney tissues are strong enough to help maintain a normal life. However, when about a half of kidney tissues are injured due to IgA Nephropathy, some creatinine begin to accumulate in the blood. Under such a case, lab tests show high serum creatinine level. Therefore, elevation of creatinine level indicates at least a half of kidney function has been impaired and in such a case, we should attach enough importance on the kidney condition.
