How High Can BUN Go with IgA Nephropathy

How high can BUN go with IgA Nephropathy? BUN, the abbreviation of Blood Urea Nitrogen, refers to the waste product of the digestion of protein. With many other wastes together, it is excreted out of the body through kidney and along with urine. Therefore, with routine urine test, we can find there are lots of urea nitrogen in the urine. However, for IgA Nephropathy patients, due to impairment of kidney function, urea nitrogen produced in the body can not be discharged timely. Under such a condition, BUN level begins to appear. Well, for people with IgA Nephropathy, how high can their BUN go?

For healthy adults, per 100ml of blood should contain 6-20 milligram of urea nitrogen. Urea nitrogen belongs to small molecular material which can pass through glomerular filtration membrane freely. Therefore, with healthy kidney, BUN level can be kept in the normal range. However, when kidney function is affected due to IgA Nephropathy, urea nitrogen produced in the body will be failed to be discharged. In general, BUN begins to increase when a half of kidney function is affected. Therefore, in the very early stage of IgA Nephropathy, BUN level does not increase at all. Usually, when IgA Nephropathy develops to stage 3, test report will show elevated BUN level.

As the severity of IgA Nephropathy is directly linked with BUN level, so patients with IgA Nephropathy in advanced stage always have a higher BUN level. When illness develops to end stage, the urea nitrogen level in blood may reach to a very high level like 300 mg/dL or even higher.

IgA Nephropathy, elevation of BUN level not only indicate serious kidney damages, but also means high levels of toxins in blood. These toxins threaten internal organs like heart, so when BUN level increases to a certain level, dialysis will be suggested to purify blood. Viewed from this aspect, tight control of BUN level is as important as tight control of creatinine level. And the best way to control BUN level is to strengthen kidney and improve kidney function.
