Outlook for Kidney Transplant with Berger's Disease

Outlook for Kidney Transplant with Berger's DiseaseBerger’s Disease is also known as IgA Nephropathy, which is caused by Immunoglobulin A. When it develops to kidney failure, kidney transplant becomes a favor for patients. But is kidney transplant really a good choice? In the following, we will discuss about the outlook for kidney transplant with Berger’s Disease.

Advantages of kidney transplant for People with Berger’s Disease

Because kidney transplant is to put another healthy kidney into your body, it can work as your own kidneys. With the improvement of kidney function, you do not have to follow a strict diet and you can go back to a relatively more normal life than maintenance dialysis does.

Disadvantages of kidney transplant for people with Berger’s Disease

Kidney transplant is not perfect. It has many disadvantages as well. After kidney transplant, you have to take immunosuppressants to restrain your immune system from attacking the new kidneys. The long-term use of immunosuppressants lowers your immune system so that you are easily attacked by high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, etc.

Because Berger’s Disease is an immune disease. If you can not regulate the abnormal immune system, IgA may deposit in the new kidneys again so as to cause recurrence of IgA Nephropathy. Some data show that recurrence rate of IgA Nephropathy is as high as 50 %. If you would like to do kidney transplant, you have to prepare that you will have to dialysis again.

Alternative treatment to kidney transplant

If you can improve your own kidney function, you can avoid dialysis and kidney transplant. Immunotherapy can regulate the abnormal immune system by accurate diagnosis, immune clearance, immune blocking, immune regulation, immune tolerance and immune protection. This sets up a good environment for kidney self-healing. If your GFR can be increased to 15%, you can live a relatively normal life.
