Health lies in reasonable diet. Such a diet can not only help patients control symptoms, but also is good for their growth because their body and brain are undergoing growth and final formation. A reasonable diet should contain the nutrients that child needs, while reducing the waste production so as to decrease the workload of kidneys.

Sodium and fluid

Because the child often has edema, you had better watch their intake of sodium and fluid,which may worsen their medical condition. Usually 500 mg sodium diet is satisfactory.


Protein is important for growth, but if your child has severe proteinuria, you should limit their intake of plant protein and prepare some high quality protein, such as egg white, lean meat, fish, milk, etc. Under normal circumstance, 1-2gm per kilogram body weight should be adequate for most children. A very high protein diet can make the kidneys to filter more of the proteins.


In order conserve protein in the body, you had better ensure the intake of calories for children. In such case, carbohydrates are preferred to fat, because patients with Nephrotic Syndrome have high serum cholesterol level. Rice, cereal, sweat potatoes,carrots and so on are good source of carbohydrates.


Fat intake is indispensable for health. But in order to lower cholesterol level, you should avoid saturated fats, such as butter and margarine and choose some unsaturated fats, such as fish oil and flaxseed oil.
