Diet Advice for Nephrotic Syndrome Patients with Swelling

Diet Advice for Nephrotic Syndrome Patients with SwellingWhen one is sick, a well-planed diet will contribute to his recovery and at that time, what foods he can eat depends on his condition. Nephrotic Syndrome is a kidney problem that attacks children easily. It can cause lots of protein in urine and also result in swelling in different body parts like eyelid, face, ankle, feet and hands. In such a case, an improper diet will worsen illness condition, whereas a scientific diet contributes to the tight control of these symptoms. Well, for Nephrotic Syndrome patients with swelling, what should be their diet plan?

The following is the diet advice for Nephrotic Syndrome patients with swelling. If you have any questions after reading it or you have further questions, please leave message to igacure@gmail.com.

1. Low-salt diet

Low-salt diet is recommended because it not only aggravates swelling problem, but also triggers high blood pressure. To limit salt intake, Nephrotic Syndrome patients need to stay far away from salted foods and processed foods.

2. Proper protein intake

Knowing how much protein is needed is very important for Nephrotic Syndrome patients because both high protein intake and low protein intake are very harmful. High protein intake can cause worsening of proteinuria and low protein intake will aggravate hypoproteinemia. (as our online doctor to help you figure out how much protein is needed by you)

3. Limit fluid intake

Swelling is the presence of fluid retention. When kidneys are not able to remove excess fluid out of the body, the more fluid we drink, the more severe the swelling. Therefore, Nephrotic Syndrome patients need to limit fluid intake.

4. Low fat diet

Low fat diet is also needed for Nephrotic Syndrome patients with swelling protein. In Nephrotic Syndrome, swelling results from serious protein leakage which also cause hyperlipidaemia. Therefore, fatty foods should be excluded from their dining-table.

5. Pay attention to potassium intake and phosphorus intake

Nephrotic Syndrome is a kidney-related illness which can cause decline of kidney function. One of the major jobs of kidney is to maintain electrolyte balance, so when there is something goes wrong with kidney, electrolyte disturbance appears easily and this usually presents as hyperkalemia and hyperphosphatemia. Therefore, Nephrotic Syndrome patients also need to pay attention to their potassium intake and phosphorus intake.
