Do Patients with Nephrotic Syndrome Need to Reduce Protein Intake

Do Patients with Nephrotic Syndrome Need to Reduce Protein IntakeDo patients with Nephrotic Syndrome need to reduce protein intake? Protein intake should be regulated when kidneys fail to work well, because high protein intake is very harmful for kidney. However, for Nephrotic Syndrome patients, they have lost so many protein through urine that they develop hypoproteinemia. Under such a condition, is protein limitation necessary?

Protein limitation is needed for kidney disease patients because the more protein they ingest, the more protein will be lost in urine, which can aggravate proteinuria. For this reason, protein limitation is needed by kidney disease patients. How much protein is needed by them is based on their illness condition.

Protein limitation is needed by kidney disease patients, but for people with Nephrotic Syndrome, they need to be especially careful about their protein intake for two reasons:

1. Severe protein releasing in urine

Massive protein in urine is the typical clinical manifestation of Nephrotic Syndrome and it usually worsens with the aggravation of illness. To tightly control proteinuria, some Nephrotic Syndrome patients are asked to have a low-protein intake. This helps to bring symptom of proteinuria under control and slows down illness condition.

2. Hypoproteinemia

Protein is the basic of life, which means we can not live at all without protein. Hypoproteinemia is one of the complications of Nephrotic Syndrome and if it is not controlled well, it will lead to low immunity, developmental retardation, fatty live, etc. Therefore, increasing protein in urine is very important. For this reason, some Nephrotic Syndrome patients are not suggested to limit protein intake.

Actually, for a Nephrotic Syndrome patient, whether he needs to reduce protein intake depends on his exact illness condition. You can describe your illness condition to our online doctor to get individual advice.
