What To Eat for a Child with Nephrotic SyndromeNephrotic Syndrome is a common kidney disorder which can affect people of any age, but often firstly seen in children. Foods with high quality protein

For a child with Nephrotic Syndrome, he is advised to ingest 1.2 to 1.8 gram per kilogram body weight per day if his kidneys still work well. However, if his illness has develop to advanced stage, the protein intake should be limited to 0.5grm per kilogram of body weight per day. Also, about 60% of protein should be high quality protein which can be found in lean meat, fish, egg white, milk and beef.

Avoid high sodium foods

High sodium foods should be a taboo for child with Nephrotic Syndrome child, not only because high sodium intake aggravates fluid retention, one of the visible symptoms of Nephrotic Syndrome, but also because high sodium diet elevates blood pressure. Pickled foods and processed are the most common high sodium foods, so they should be excluded from dining-table.

Fluid limitation

Fluid limitation is also necessary if there is swelling which usually firstly appear in face, eyelid, hand, feet and ankles. Exact fluid intake is based on the urine output. In addition, soup should be included in daily fluid intake.

Fruits and vegetable

Fruits and vegetables are usually very high in vitamin and fiber, so children with Nephrotic Syndrome are usually advised to eat more fruits and vegetables, but as they are easily to have electrolyte disturbance, they need to choose the right one according to their test report.

Lastly, the diet for children with Nephrotic Syndrome should be adjusted from time to time according to their illness condition, so as to help to manage illness condition well without causing further health tissues.
