What Type of Food Should You Stay Away from if You Have Nephrotic SyndromeSo far more and more Nephrotic Syndrome patients begin to realize the important role diet plays in protecting kidney function and slowing down the progression to kidney failure. When you are diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome, you should know what type of food you can eat and what type of food you should avoid. In the following, we will discuss what type of food you should stay away from if you have Nephrotic Syndrome. Hope it can help you.

Food high in salt

Edema is a common symptom of Nephrotic Syndrome. Salt can retain water in the body and increase blood pressure, so you should avoid food high in salt, such as pickles. When your edema is severe, salt intake should limited into 1 g, sometimes you should follow a salt-free salt. When your proteinuria reduces and edema is alleviated, salt intake can increase properly, but it should be no more than 5 g.

Food high in fat

Because most Nephrotic Syndrome patients have hyperlipemia, you had better avoid food high in fat, for fat can make your cholesterol level higher so as to increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. But you can eat proper food packed with unsaturated fatty acids, such as fish oil and flaxseed oil.

Massive protein

Though massive protein leaks from body, it does not mean you should take massive protein to supplement the lost ones. Because too much protein intake can increase the burden of kidneys so as to worsen proteinuria. But you should eat moderate high quality protein to satisfy the need of body.

According to the blood test, you may be required to avoid food high in potassium and phosphorus if your blood potassium level and phosphorus level are higher than the normal level.
