Can You Die from Eating Too Many Bananas if You Have Nephrotic Syndrome

Can You Die from Eating Too Many Bananas if You Have Nephrotic SyndromeBanana is a kind of fruit very common to see in the daily, which does not only taste delicious, but also has many health benefits, such as boost energy, maintaining normal blood pressure, etc. But for Nephrotic Syndrome patients who have many diet restrictions, they are usually recommended to limit the intake of bananas. Can you die from eating too many bananas if you have Nephrotic Syndrome?

Why eating too many bananas is dangerous for Nephrotic Syndrome?

It is possible that you die from eating too many bananas, because bananas is packed with rich potassium. One banana contains about 422 mg of potassium. Potassium is a mineral used to counteract the effect of sodium so as to lower blood pressure and maintain fluid in the body. For healthy people, their kidneys can remove the excess potassium from body, but for Nephrotic Syndrome patients, their damaged kidneys can not keep blood potassium within a normal range. As a result, potassium builds up in the body. Too much potassium can cause nausea, muscle weakness or dangerous heart rhythm. It can also trigger cardiac arrest. Therefore, you had better avoid eating too many bananas if your blood potassium level is higher than the normal level (3.5-5.0 mEq/L). But it does not mean you can not eat bananas.

How many bananas can you eat?

In the early stage of Nephrotic Syndrome, you can get 4700 mg potassium daily and in the advanced stage, you should control potassium intake into 1500-2700 mg/d. The banana intake should be made according to your medical condition.

When your kidney function improves, you can enjoy whatever you like and there are no strict diet restrictions. If you would like more information about diet plan and treatment plan for Nephrotic Syndrome patients, you can consult our online doctors.
