How Many Calories Should Be Given to A Nephrotic Syndrome PatientNephrotic Syndrome patients should follow a renal-friendly diet if they want to achieve a good therapeutic effect. Today let’s have a look at how many calories should be given to a Nephrotic Syndrome patient.

There are three sources of calories in your body, namely protein, fat and carbohydrate.

Nephrotic Syndrome patients should limit the intake of protein.

Proteinuria is a typical symptom of Nephrotic Syndrome. Too much protein intake can put extra stress on your kidneys so as to worsen proteinuria and BUN. Therefore, patients should limit the intake of protein. The amount of protein intake depends on your weight, kidney function and many other symptoms. For example, if you are in stage 3 CKD, 0.8-1.0 g/kg high quality protein intake is OK.

Nephrotic Syndrome patients should also restrict the intake of fat.

Nephrotic Syndrome can also cause hyperlipemia. In such case, you should limit the intake of fat, especially saturated fat, because it can raise your cholesterol level further, increasing your risk of heart failure. But you can eat moderate unsaturated fat, such as fish oil and flaxseed oil to satisfy the need of body.

Nephrotic Syndrome patients should supplement enough carbohydrate.

Because of the restriction of protein and fat, you should supplement enough carbohydrate. How much carbohydrate you should eat depends on your labor intensity. If you just stay in bed, you should consume 30-35 kcal/kg or 126-147 kj/kg carbohydrate per day. If you do some work or exercise, you should increase the intake of carbohydrate.
