What to Eat for Nephrotic Syndrome Patients with Edema

What to Eat for Nephrotic Syndrome Patients with Edema Edema is a typical symptom of Nephrotic Syndrome patients. Without timely treatment, it can worsen your disease. Apart from medical treatment, you should pay attention to diet. What to eat for Nephrotic Syndrome patients with edema?

You should follow a low salt diet.

Generally speaking, as long as you have edema, you should follow a low salt diet (about 3g per day), because sodium in salt can retain fluid in body so as to deteriorate your swelling. In severe cases, you should avoid salt intake. Food high in salt, such as pickles and processed food should be limited as well.

You should supplement moderate protein.

For Nephrotic Syndrome patients, their edema usually results from massive protein leaking into the urine. Because protein leakage can decrease plasma colloid osmotic pressure and then fluid flows into the tissue space. Therefore, it is necessary for you to supplement moderate protein to recover plasma colloid osmotic pressure. But too much protein intake can put extra stress on the kidneys and worsen proteinuria, so you should know the recommended daily protein intake, which is decided according to your medical condition.

You can eat some fresh vegetables and fruits.

Fresh vegetables and fruits are great source of various minerals, dietary fiber, vitamins, and so on. They are all good for your health. But with severe edema, you had better stay those juicy fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon away. But some of them are diuretic, such as wax gourd, cucumbers and apple cider vinegar, which can help you flush out the excess fluid from the body so as to relieve edema.
