Why Is Sodium Restricted in Nephrotic Syndrome

With Nephrotic Syndrome, you may have swelling, proteinuria, hyperlipemia and hypoproteinemia and some other symptoms. In order to manage it well, you may have to follow a restricted diet, for example, you should restrict sodium intake. Why is sodium restricted in Nephrotic Syndrome? If you have the similar doubt, the following information may be helpful for you.

Sodium restriction helps relieve edema and lower blood pressure.

Fluid retention is a clinical manifestation of Nephrotic Syndrome. When you take a lot of sodium, you feel thirsty so that you have to drink water. This can worsen your edema. Besides, too much sodium intake raises your blood volume so as to raise your blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause further damage to your kidneys and it also increases your risk of heart disease. Therefore, to have a good control of Nephrotic Syndrome, you had better limit sodium intake. When your edema disappears and blood pressure is normal, you can go back to eating normally again, but low sodium intake is still recommended.

Sodium restriction does not mean you should avoid sodium intake with Nephrotic Syndrome.

Sodium is an essential part of our body. It helps keep the water and electrolyte balance of the body. It is also important in how nerves and muscles work. If you do not consume sodium for a long-term, you may have poor appetite, weakness and dizziness. In severe cases, you may have nausea, vomit, muscle cramp, blurred vision, etc. Therefore, you should have a correct knowledge of sodium restriction.
