What Can I Do to Keep the Puffiness Down with Nephrotic Syndrome

Question: Hi we just discovered a week ago my son has Nephrotic Syndrome. I am just worried his cheeks has really puffed up. what can I do to keep the puffiness down?

What Can I Do to Keep the Puffiness Down with Nephrotic SyndromeAnswer: Nephrotic Syndrome may affect both adults and children. But children run a higher risk. Some researches show that approximately 5 out of every 100,000 children are diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome every year.

What causes puffiness for Nephrotic Syndrome patients?

-Nephrotic Syndrome happens when tiny filtering units in the kidneys stop working properly. As a result, large quantity of protein leaks into the urine. And then plasma colloid osmotic pressure lowers and fluid comes into the tissue space, leading to edema. Edema may occur in every place, such as face, ankle, legs, etc.

-The most common used drugs to reduce protein leakage is steroid such as prednisone. This kind of medicine has many side effects, for example, “moon face” and weight gain.

What to do to keep the puffiness down?

If it is caused by water retention associated with proteinuria, it is necessary to control the proteinuria first. Besides steroids, there are other medicines such as ACEI and ARBs, which can reduce the pressure to the blood vessels so as to decrease protein leakage. If it is the side effects of steroids, you had better talk with the doctor to change some natural remedies for your child.

In Shijiazhuang Kidney Disease Hospital, there are some characteristic treatment, such as Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy, Foot Bath, Full Bath, Circle Therapy, etc. These therapies can detoxify the blood and improve blood circulation to set up a good blood circumstance for kidney self-healing. They can also remove inflammatory factors from kidneys and degrade extracellular matrix to reduce further kidney damage. When kidneys repair themselves, symptoms associated with Nephrotic Syndrome disappear.
