Fever, Swelling Face and Legs and Nephrotic Syndrome: How to Deal with It

Question: My son has got Nephrotic Syndrome and he is having fever today. His face and legs are swelled. Please kindly suggest.

Fever, Swelling Face and Legs and Nephrotic Syndrome: How to Deal with ItAnswer: Nephrotic Syndrome is characterized by frequent relapse. Many factors can trigger its relapse, such as cold, infection, etc. You said your son has fever. It may indicate that there is infection in the body. Fever is the body’s natural way to protect itself from invaders like bacteria and virus, because many of them are unable to survive in the body due to the high temperature caused by a fever.

Ways to control fever

Fever can worsen the state of illness, so you had better degrade it first. Because some medicine has renal toxicity, you should pay attention to them in case that they cause further damage to the kidneys. Thus, take medicine under the instruction of body. Besides medicine, there are some physical cooling ways. For example, put ice bag on forehead, scrub the body with water, tepid water baths, etc.

Treatment to control swelling

The typical symptoms of Nephrotic Syndrome are swelling and foamy urine. Does your son have proteinuria? Proteinuria is the main cause of swelling for Nephrotic Syndrome patients.

-If the edema is severe, diuretics can help the patients flush out the fluid from the body.

-Steroids may be needed to reduce protein leakage.

Western medicine helps control symptoms, but they can not prevent relapse of Nephrotic Syndrome. And they can not repair the damaged kidneys and improve kidney function neither. A systemic treatment consisted of Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy, Medicated Bath, Mai Kang Mixture and decoction can decompose the immune complexes from the blood to cease kidney inflammation. They can also detoxify the blood and remove stasis to improve blood circulation. Moreover, they can stop kidney fibrosis and strengthen immune system. After a period of treatment, kidney function improves and the corresponding symptoms disappear.
