Throwing Up and Nephrotic Syndrome

Question: My partner is in remission from Nephrotic Syndrome, but has been throwing up for the past 4 mornings. Could this be a sign its coming back?

Throwing Up and Nephrotic SyndromeAnswer: As for this question, I will answer you from the following several aspects:

1.How is throwing up linked up with Nephrotic Syndrome?

Throwing up is forcing the contents of the stomach up through the esophagus and out of the mouth. For Nephrotic Syndrome patients, they throw up due to high urea nitrogen level in blood. Urea nitrogen is a waste product of the digestion of protein. For normal human adult, blood urea nitrogen should be kept in the range of 6 to 20 mg, but for Nephrotic Syndrome, due to impairment of kidney function, urea nitrogen can not be excreted timely, leading to high BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) level. Under the effect of urea enzymes, urea nitrogen is decomposed and ammonia is produced during this process. Ammonia stimulates gastrointestinal tract and thus cause throwing up.

2. Why is the symptoms more serious in the morning?

Throwing up or vomiting is usually more serious in the morning for Nephrotic Syndrome. Kidney is an organ that helps to excrete urea nitrogen and other wastes. When kidney function is affected, urea nitrogen build up in the blood quickly. At night, patients drink less water, so the concentration of urea nitrogen in the blood increases. Therefore, when they get up in the morning, they usually have a strong urge to throw up.

3. Is throwing up a sign that Nephrotic Syndrome comes back?

For a Nephrotic Syndrome patient who have no vomiting symptom before, appearance of this symptom always indicates further elevation of BUN level. Also, it means worsening of kidney function to some extent. Under such a condition, strengthening kidney to improve kidney function is the only way to get this symptoms, say throwing up, removed or alleviated fundamentally.
