Causes and Management of Pleural Effusion in Nephrotic SyndromePleural effusion refers to the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pleural cavity. Nephrotic Syndrome is a problem regarding kidney and develops to kidney failure gradually if we fail to bring it under control. How is pleural effusion caused by Nephrotic Syndrome?

Nephrotic Syndrome patients run a certain risk for pleural effusion. Nephrotic Syndrome is a kidney problem in which large amounts of protein leak into urine due to increased permeability of glomerular filtration membrane.

Blood is composed of different substances like protein, lipid, platelet, red blood cell and white blood cell. When massive proteins are lost from urine, plasma osmotic pressure decreases, which can lead to fluid retention. Under such a condition, pleural effusion appears easily.

Management of pleural effusion in Nephrotic Syndrome

Since the appearance of pleural effusion is associated with Nephrotic Syndrome, effective management not only refers to treatment for pleural effusion, but also includes treatment for Nephrotic Syndrome.

There are different treatment methods for pleural effusion such as tube thoracotomy, pleurodesis, pleural drain and pleural decortication. Nephrotic Syndrome patients choose the right treatment method according to their illness condition.
