Diuretics for Swelling in Nephrotic Syndrome

Diuretics for Swelling in Nephrotic SyndromeSwelling is a typical symptom of Nephrotic Syndrome, an illness in which protein are leaked into urine from kidney. In medicine, many drugs can be used to deal with swelling problem and diuretic is one of them. Here we will mainly introduce several commonly used diuretics for swelling in Nephrotic Syndrome.

1. Loop diuretics

Common loop diuretics for Nephrotic Syndrome include furosemide and bumetanide. It is better to use loop diuretics together with potassium-sparing diuretics, as it can cause serious loss of potassium. In treatment for Nephrotic Syndrome, loop diuretics help to alleviate swelling by reducing sodium level in blood. This medicine is not only available for patients whose kidney is injured mildly, but also available for these whose illness has developed to a relatively severe stage.

2. Thiazide diuretics

Commonly used thiazide diuretics include hydrochlorothiazide which not only helps to treat swelling caused by Nephrotic Syndrome, but also shows effects in treating nephrogenic diadetes insipidus. Similar with loop diuretics, thiazide diuretics are also not used for patients whose kidneys have been damaged severely.

3. Potassium-sparing diuretics

Potassium diuretic refers to a group of medicines that can contribute to urine output, but meanwhile causes no potassium loss. This kind of diuretic is usually used by patients whose potassium level is lower than the normal range and not available for people with serious renal insufficiency.

Diuretics can help to treat swelling, because with this kind of medicine, excess fluid in the body can be excreted out as urine. Additional, although they are very helpful, they always cause many side effects like fluctuation of blood sugar, electrolyte disturbance and lipid metabolism disorder and so on. Therefore, it is necessary for Nephrotic Syndrome patients to learn about how to manage side effects caused by these medicines in advance.
